Day 1: Fish River Canyon

Travel Photography

Day 1 in Namibia was spent traveling from the South African/Namibian border to Canon Lodge which is located in Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. We arrive early in the afternoon and settled into Canon Lodge before we headed out to Fish River Canyon. The canyon is the second largest canyon in the world, and it is spectacularly beautiful. We stayed at the canyon until after sunset to photograph both sunset and twilight.  Canon Lodge was fantastic.  The food was great - they grow much of their own food - and you can tell it's fresh.  Loved our stay here and wished we could stayed longer!

Animal sightings: We saw a spitting cobra on the road, and ostrich family including chicks on the way to Canon Lodge. On the way back from the Canyon in the evening we saw a black backed jackal.

Technical notes: I used a 3 stop graduated neutral density filter and still had to bring the sky highlights down a little in Lightroom.  Probably could have used a 6 stop filter with no problem. A tripod is a must for longer exposures at sunset and twilight. I used a telephoto lens for a few shots but mostly stuck to a wild angle lens to capture the vastness of the canyon. Be patient the light does great things for those who wait for it.
